It's Sunday, so we continue our special partnership with the Leopold Museum in Vienna. It is also the last day of May; hope it was a good month for you. Enjoy!  :)

As he so often did in his paintings, Carl Moll chose a landscape motif for this depiction. Dusk is falling, the color of the sky is changing, and the setting sun has left behind a red shimmer. Moll was standing by the edge of a body of water, looking at a tree on the opposite shoreline. The feeble light envelops the tree and vegetation with a dark green with slightly brighter horizontal areas. The reflection of the tree on the water is blurred by the movement of the waves, and the contours seem to be dissolving.

P.S. This poetic sense of transition and fading light finds a powerful counterpart in our fine art print of The Fighting Temeraire by J. M. W. Turner, where the last journey of a historic ship is rendered in a glowing, atmospheric farewell. Check it out in our DailyArt Shop
