Maurice Denis often spent his summers with his family in Brittany, where the sea and coastal life became recurring themes in his work. In this painting, a group of children (all orphans) walk along the shore accompanied by three nuns. The nuns’ white wimples echo the sails of the boats in the distance, subtly linking the figures to the maritime setting.

Denis limits his palette largely to orange and blue, complementary colors that create a warm, golden light typical of the end of the day. The scene shimmers with brightness, heightened by small touches of white across the surface of the water. Denis was initially associated with the Les Nabis, whose ideas he helped formulate in 1890, but he later moved away from the group and devoted much of his career to decorative projects and the renewal of religious painting.
