Maurice Denis was one of the leading figures of French Symbolism and a founding member of Les Nabis. Believing that a painting should be valued as an arrangement of colors and forms rather than a boring imitation of nature, he helped lay the foundations for modern movements such as Fauvism, Cubism, and abstraction. Alongside his easel paintings, Denis was also a celebrated muralist and champion of the revival of religious art in the early 20th century.
After first visiting Perros-Guirec in 1886, Maurice Denis fell in love with the Breton coast and later made it his summer retreat. This serene painting depicts the nearby harbor of Port-Blanc, where bathers enjoy a tranquil seaside landscape. The composition is defined by broad areas of soft color and rhythmic white brushstrokes that suggest the gentle movement of the sea. Two nude figures stand confidently among the distinctive pink granite rocks, while others swim in the calm, sunlit water.
