Suze Robertson (1855–1922) was one of the most important Dutch modern artists at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. In an expressive manner—using bold brushstrokes, heavy contour lines, and primary and dark colors—Robertson made landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Robertson's Greta is a captivating painting that portrays a young woman with an enigmatic expression that conveys both sadness and determination. Robertson frequently painted Greta, but in this painting she removed all contextual elements to make the girl the sole focus of the piece. This draws attention to the subject's contemplative expression, creating a more intimate and emotional portrait. The artist donated the painting to the museum in the year of her passing, as a gesture of appreciation for the help and support the museum had provided to her.

We present today's work thanks to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.  :)
