Autumn Sea was painted at the Normandy shore in Northern France. Courbet is mostly known for his controversial figurative compositions of subjects that were considered vulgar at the time, but he also loved to paint seascapes and landscapes. The vastness of the sea had made a strong impression on him in his early age. This masterpiece is one of the few that the artist painted while visiting Normandy in the summer and autumn of 1865.
