Danae

oil on canvas • 77 x 83 cm
  • Gustav Klimt - July 14, 1862 - February 6, 1918 Gustav Klimt 1908

This painting is typical of Klimt’s stylized eroticism. The subject is Danae, a popular subject in painting, used before by painters like Correggio, Rembrandt, and Titian. Danae was the symbol of divine love, transcendence, and sensual beauty. By positioning the model with leg raised, the painting pays tribute to Titian’s series of works of the same name. The story goes that while Danae was imprisoned by her father she was visited by Zeus, in the form of golden rain flowing between her legs. Soon after the visit she became pregnant and gave birth to her son Perseus.
