Boreas was the Greek god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter. His name meant "North Wind" or "Devouring One". Boreas is usually depicted as being very strong, with a violent temper to match. Here, Waterhouse depicts a young girl as a contrast to the aggressive, cold wind.
