Here, Van Gogh has depicted his bedroom in the Yellow House, where he rented four rooms for himself and for Gauguin. The room is furnished with simple pine furniture and his own paintings. Look at how the paintings on the walls seem to tilt upward. This is because the artist has not applied the laws of perspective. Van Gogh used this technique on purpose. In letters to his brother Theo, he wrote that he wanted the painting to resemble a Japanese print. Van Gogh produced three, almost identical paintings on this theme: this one is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, another one is in Art Institute of Chicago and the last one in Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
