Gerard van Honthorst was a painter during the Dutch Golden Age. It was a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, in which Dutch trade, science, military and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. Van Honthorst was one of the leading artists of Utrecht Caravaggism - a group of artists who produced both historical paintings and generally large scenes in an Italian-influenced style, often making heavy use of chiaroscuro.
