La Tour was a French Baroque painter who is best known for religious chiaroscuro scenes lit by candlelight. The term “chiaroscuro” refers to clear tonal contrasts which are used to suggest the volume and modelling of the subjects depicted. La Tour's paintings reflect the Baroque naturalism of Caravaggio. La Tour probably acquired this technique through the Dutch Caravaggisti of the Utrecht School.
