The Princess depicts a beautiful Western woman wearing a kimono, standing amidst numerous Asian objects. Critics have seen influences of the Japanese woodblock maker Kitagawa Utamaro in the painting, as well as 18th-century French chinoiserie stylings. Chinoiserie is a French term signifying "Chinese-esque", which refers to Chinese artistic influences. It is a recurring theme in European art since the seventeenth century.
