In 1908 Kandinsky and his pupil and companion Gabriele Münter (1877–1962) moved to Murnau in Bavaria, where he began to paint a series of landscapes inspired by the nearby Staffelsee and its surrounding mountains in fluid brushstrokes and dark colours.
