Today is not only International Artists' Day but also Pablo Picasso's birthday! Unfortunately, because of copyrights, we can't feature his work; we will show today a work by his fellow Cubist, Juan Gris.

Starting in 1915, the motif of a still life before a window became a central theme of Juan Gris's work. This composition allowed Gris to explore the contrast between the introspective nature of Cubism, applied to still life, and the extroverted, joyous Mediterranean approach he brought to the landscape. For Gris, this subject became a way to delve deeper into the three-dimensional treatment of the Cubist plane, distinguishing his work from the Cubism of Picasso and Braque. Gris began incorporating light and shadow from outdoor scenes into the Cubist representation of the foreground still life, resulting in a dynamic interplay of interior and exterior spaces.
