Some specialists believe that Bruegel painted this scene on his own, others argue he had the help of his workshop. Several versions and numerous copies of this composition exist; some of them as late as the 18th century. It may be that the artist is alluding to the winter of 1564/65 which was particularly severe. This scene probably contains a deeper meaning. Artists frequently used skating scenes to express the uncertain and slippery nature of existence.
