Morris Hirshfield was born in Poland in 1872 and immigrated to the United States around 1890. He wanted to be an artist all his life, but life wasn't so flexible. He married, had four children, and had two successful careers, first as a tailor of women’s cloaks and dresses and then as a shoe designer whose biggest hit was his patented designs for wool felt boudoir slippers, produced by his company, E-Z Walk.

He turned to painting full-time late, in his early 60s, when ill health forced him to retire. His art emerged almost fully formed in nearly 80 paintings created in the last seven years of his life. They are amazing. To be honest, they are more than amazing. I think they are genius! Now he is considered one of the most critically acclaimed self-taught artists of the 20th century. His heavily patterned work, featuring women or animals, is often reminiscent of textiles, perhaps as a legacy of his first career. The zebras of today are good examples of such. But treat them as a preview before his most amazing works of CATS. You will find them in DailyArt soon.  ;)
