Jane Avril was a famous can-can dancer in 19th-century Montmartre, and Toulouse-Lautrec was fascinated by her; as he would with his favorite models, he painted and drew her again and again, and they became friends. In 1893, Toulouse-Lautrec produced this famous poster to advertise Avril’s performances at the Jardin de Paris, a fashionable dance hall in the gardens of the Champs-Elysées. The poster was a hit, and Avril credited it with launching her stage career.
