From the series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō, Man on Horseback Crossing a Bridge depicts the Wada Bridge across the Yoda River. A largely self-taught artist, Hiroshige limited himself to the devices and capacity of his own nature. He was fond of travel and loved wine and good food. His genius for landscape compositions was first recognized in the West by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.
