Fortitude is the first recorded work by Botticelli. It was created in 1470 as one of seven panels personifying the Virtues, a popular subject during the Renaissance era. Of the seven panels, only Fortitude is Botticelli's; the others (Faith, Hope, Charity, Temperance, Prudence, and Justice) are credited to Piero del Pollaiuolo. Botticelli matched Pollaiuolo’s style and composition but made his Fortitude his own with more embellishments.
