Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat) was a 19th-century cabaret in the bohemian Montmartre, created by Louis Rodolphe Salis. It is thought to be the first modern cabaret: a nightclub where the patrons sat at tables and drank alcoholic beverages while being entertained by a variety show on stage. In the 1890s, Salis took his The Black Cat entertainment company touring through France, hiring theatres and venues, a practice that was not current at that time. Steinlen created the poster to publicize the show in theatres and venues along the tour.
