Crucifixion

The crucified Christ is surrounded by the Virgin Mary, St Bernardino, St Francis, St John and St Petronio. The crucifixion of Jesus has been depicted in religious art since the 4th century CE. The site of the Crucifixion was also known as Golgotha; the place of the skull and the presence of Adam’s skull makes a typological connection between the sin of Adam and the redemption of Christ.
