Crucifixion

The crucified Christ is surrounded by the Virgin Mary, St Bernardino, St Francis, St John and St Petronio. The crucifixion of Jesus has been depicted in religious art since the 4th century CE. Do you see the skull at the bottom of the cross? It is an usual element of such depictions. Christian tradition tells us that Adam has been buried beneath the cross. The site of the Crucifixion was also known as Golgotha; the place of the skull and the presence of Adam’s skull make a typological connection between the sin of Adam and the redemption of Christ.
