Between summer 1890 and winter 1891, Monet executed about thirty paintings of the haystacks in a field near his house at Giverny. Because of the repetitious subject matter, Monet was not much concerned about the haystacks themselves - his focus was rather on depicting the differences in light and color surrounding the haystacks in different seasons, time of day, and weather.
