The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

oil on canvas • 136.3 x 212.3 cm
  • John Martin - July 19, 1789 - February 17, 1854 John Martin 1852

John Martin’s dramatic pictures made him one of the most famous British artists of the 19th century. He was born in Northumberland, and studied art in Newcastle before moving to London when he was 17. He was known for huge paintings of crisis and destruction, which illustrated Bible stories and ancient history. This huge scale obviously increased the awe-inspiring drama of the scene. To remind you the whole story with Sodom and Gomorrah - In the story, a fire storm was sent by God as punishment for the immorality of the people. Only Lot and his daughters, seen hurrying away, were saved. Lot's wife is shown behind them. According to the story, she ignored God's instruction not to look back, and was turned into a pillar of salt. It is a pure coincidence that we are showing a scene of punishment of immorality on Friday. Really. Happy Weekend :]
