Edouard Manet died 130 years ago today. This is one of two self-portraits painted by him. As a result of X-ray analysis, we know that Manet painted his Self-Portrait with Palette over a portrait in profile of his wife Suzanne Manet. It was inspired chiefly by Velazquez's self-portrait in his famous painting Las Meninas. Because Manet was almost certainly not left-handed, the painting is thought to be a mirror image.
