Johan Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He captured marine landscapes such as this in a free manner and is regarded as a forerunner of Impressionism. Jongkind mentored and influenced the young Claude Monet, whose Impression, Sunrise gave birth to the movement's name eleven years after The Beach at Sainte-Adresse was created. Jongkind was invited to participate in the first exhibition of the Impressionist group in 1874, but declined. He was to experience little success in his career, and suffered bouts of depression complicated by alcoholism.
