Today we have something special for you. The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2016. Emperor Franz Joseph formally opened the Museum in 1891. Today we feature a piece presented in the exhibition “Celebration!”. Enjoy!

This double portrait thrives on the contrast between the two sitters: the dwarf's small stature emphasizes the giant's impressive height. Legend has it that the sitters were Archduke Ferdinand's court giant, Bartlmä Bon, and his court jester, Thomele. The commission of this exceptional portrait presumably reflects contemporary interest in discoveries and Nature as well as the period's love of curiosities. In fact, both sitters played their part in court festivities and pageants, their unusual appearance enhancing the event's attraction. The giant caused quite a stir when he participated in the Vienna tournament held in 1560. The Armory at Ambras houses an original mannequin measuring 2,60 meters in height and clad in the giant's armor that he may have worn for this tournament.
