Route de Versailles, Rocquencourt

oil on canvas • 51.5 cm x 76.7 cm
  • Camille Pissarro - 10 July 1830 - 13 November 1903 Camille Pissarro 1871

Pissarro painted the road to Versailles at the village of Rocquencourt, just outside his hometown of Louveciennes. He emphasized the upward slant of the road, making it seem infinitely long. And he used the narrow horizontal shadows of the trees to make it look even wider. In this way, he created the illusion of an enormous expanse.

The painting is a splendid example of Pissarro’s early Impressionism. He tried, for example, to depict the effect of the light striking the road rather than the texture of stones and sand. Look, for example, at the loose, multicolored brushstrokes and the long blue shadows.

We present today's Pissarro (it is so beautiful and fresh!) thanks to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.  : )

P.S. As you can see, the museum's collection contains more than Van Goghs! We asked the museum staff which artworks are their favorites. Check it here, whether you plan to visit the museum soon or not. : )
