Shuvinai Ashoona began drawing in the early 1990s, and quickly rose to prominence when her work was included in the 1997 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection. Intermixing both fantastical imagery with more traditional reflections on the community that surrounds, Ashoona has become one of Cape Dorset’s most prominent artists. Her work has been exhibited extensive in Canada, the United States, and internationally, including at the 18th Biennale of Sydney, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, and Centre for Contemporary Arts Glasgow.
We present this piece thanks to the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative (WBEC). The role of WBEC has significantly expanded to include communications, promotion, advocacy, government relations, and special projects as related to the Inuit art of Cape Dorset. As a community owned organization, 90% of Cape Dorset adults are shareholders; profits are distributed back to the community in the form of annual dividends.
P.S. Have an imaginary journey to wintery Paris here. <3
