We continue our trip to The Netherlands with one of the country's most famous masterpiece. The Milkmaid, by Johannes Vermeer, is strikingly illusionistic, conveying not just details but a sense of the weight of the woman and the table. With it, we open our special month with the Rijksmuseum's collection. Enjoy!  :)

A maidservant pours milk, entirely absorbed in her work. Except for the stream of milk, everything else is still. Vermeer took this simple everyday activity and made it the subject of an impressive painting. The woman stands like a statue in the brightly lit room. Vermeer also had an eye for portaying light by means of hundreds of colorful dots playing over the surface of objects.

Johannes Vermeer is undoubtedly an absolute classic of art history. So, his other work, the Girl with a Pearl Earring, had to be included in our 50 postcards set with the most famous masterpieces! You can buy it here; you're going to love it!
