Today is Valentine's Day; as we continue our special month with the Rijksmuseum's marvelous collection, we present this beautiful painting of people in love created by Rembrandt van Rijn. And for all ART LOVERS, today DailyArt Pro will cost $1.99 instead of $5.99! Just tap the "Upgrade to PRO" button.  : )

The painting we present today gained its current name in the early 19th century; its subjects had been identified as that of a Jewish father bestowing a necklace upon his daughter on her wedding day. This interpretation is no longer accepted and the identity of the couple is uncertain. The Rijksmuseum now recognizes the subject as that of the Biblical Isaac and Rebecca.

To prevent being killed and having his wife captured by King Abimelech, Isaac concealed his love for Rebecca by pretending they were brother and sister. Their intimacy betrayed them, however, when they thought they were not being spied on. Rembrandt depicts them in a tender moment. Furthermore, he works with exceptional freedom, applies the paint thickly, and scratches into it with the butt end of his paintbrush.

The beautiful, universal theme of a couple joined in love ... enjoy and have a great day with your loved ones.  : )
