Today, we start a monthly partnership with the Finnish National Gallery - which means that for the next four Sundays, we will present amazing works from their collection. Enjoy! :)

Vincent van Gogh created this masterpiece while residing in the quaint town of Auvers-sur-Oise, located in the northern region of France. He had journeyed there following the counsel of his brother Theo, seeking treatment for his mental health struggles. Tragically, Vincent's life came to a devastating end in Auvers-sur-Oise, and this painting stands as one of his final artistic expressions.

The artwork passed through the hands of the artist's brother and later his widow before finding its way into the possession of Julien Leclercq. Julien Leclercq, a distinguished French poet and art critic, is renowned for organizing the inaugural van Gogh retrospective in Paris in the year 1901. Notably, he was married to Fanny Flodin, a talented Finnish pianist who happened to be the sister of the acclaimed sculptor Hilda Flodin. In 1903, Fanny made the decision to sell this remarkable painting to the Antell delegation, with the intent of it becoming part of Ateneum's prestigious collection.

This significant acquisition marked a historic moment, as Ateneum, the Finnish National Gallery, became the first museum in the world to possess a work by the illustrious Vincent van Gogh.
