Jan Brueghel was one of the most celebrated flower painters of his age. From 1605 onwards, his floral still lifes brought new complexity and depth to the emerging genre; his first painting of this type included 72 varieties of Spring and Summer flowers. This composition, while not quite so extravagant, is typically bright and dense. As you may realize, the way these flowers are arranged is totally unrealistic (but so beautiful). With his meticulous and very precise style, Brueghel creates a richly variegated bouquet with subtle gradations of color.

P.S. As we are already waiting for the Spring here in the Northern Hemisphere, we decided that Flora in Art would be our main theme this week in DailyArt Magazine. For every theme week, there is a special newsletter with article previews. You can subscribe here.
