Modest Huys was a Flemish Impressionist and Luminist painter. He worked in his father’s painting and decorating business from a young age and when he met Emile Claus (a famous Belgian painter) in 1891 he decided to become an artist as well. In 1900 he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, but never finished his training there. From 1905, he participated in the exhibitions of Vie et Lumière, a luminist group, mainly painting landscapes. After the First World War, he painted scenes of the devastation at the front.

During his life he was mostly painting figures, portraits, landscapes, rural life, and folk scenes in the Leie region, especially the region of Olsene and Gottem. Harvest scenes, flax cultivation, fairs, processions, and pilgrimages were his trademark.

His works were suggested to us by one of our users, and I'm so happy we can discover his works together!

P.S. Here are seven Luminist seascapes to make you want a beach vacation. <3
