Winter Moon Night

Colour woodcut, possibly from four printing blocks sawn in pieces, on wove paper • 36.7 x 32.3 cm
  • Ernst Ludwig Kirchner - 6 May 1880 - 15 June 1938 Ernst Ludwig Kirchner 1919

Winter Moon Night has its origins in what the artist referred to as a “madly beautiful” experience of nature. In extravagant colors it shows the view from his window across the Längmatte, with the Altein massif on one side and the Tinzenhorn in the background. Kirchner printed this woodcut from several blocks, each inked in a different color, which he placed precisely next to and on top of one another in such a way that the colors overlap. Earlier that year, he had had his press, which weighed over 100 kilograms (over 220 pounds), brought from Berlin to his place of exile in Switzerland.

We present today's atmospheric woodcut thanks to the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.  :)
