José María Tranquilino Francisco de Jesús Velasco Gómez Obregón, generally known as José María Velasco, was a 19th-century Mexican polymath, most famous as a painter who made Mexican geography a symbol of national identity through his paintings. He was both one of the most popular artists of the time and internationally renowned. His painting El valle de México is considered his masterpiece; he created seven different renditions and we present one of them today. Of all the 19th-century painters, Velasco was the "first to be elevated in the post-Revolutionary period as an exemplar of nationalism."

P.S. See another masterpiece by José María Velasco that combines the beauty of Mexican landscape with the newly emerging industrialization of the country.

P.P.S. Landscapes usually take my breath away. If you feel similarly, maybe writing down your thoughts about the beauty of a painting will be something helpful. If so, please check our Art Journals in the DailyArt Shop.
