Michaelina Wautier (also Woutiers) was a painter from the Southern Netherlands in the 17th century. Only since the turn of the 21st century has her work been recognized as that of an outstanding female Baroque artist, her works having been previously attributed to male artists, especially her brother Charles. Such a situation (attributing art created by women to men) is still too common for art history. This is why our celebrations of Women's History Month seem to be very necessary!

Wautier was noted for the variety of subjects and genres in which she worked. This was unusual for female artists of the time who were more often restricted to smaller paintings, generally portraits or still-lifes. She often painted more ambitious canvases with main subjects of history, religion, and mythology. Unlike many other women painters of this period, Wautier received recognition while alive. In particular, she sold four paintings to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria for his painting gallery. Her work fell into oblivion, however, after her death.

The Education of the Virgin shows the young Virgin Mary with her mother Anne and her father Joachim. In the pillar on the right is the inscription "Michaelina Wautier, invenit, et fecit 1656," indicating that she both composed and executed the painting in 1656.

We present today's work thanks to the Mauritshuis. <3
