  • Claude Monet - 14 November 1840 - 5 December 1926 Claude Monet 1881

Impressionism, probably one of the most famous art movements of Western art, was characterized by relatively small, thin, visible brush strokes; open composition; an emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time); ordinary subject matter; unusual visual angles; and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience. Today's painting is a great example of Impressionism. The poppies in this painting are no more than small bright dabs of paint. Monet once wrote of his working method: "When you paint outdoors, attempt to forget the objects you see before you (...) Think only: here is a blue square, here a pink triangle, here a yellow stripe and paint exactly what is before your eyes."

We present today's work thanks to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

Happy June, everyone!
