Landscape with Arch Bridge

oil on canvas • 29 x 40 cm
  • Rembrandt van Rijn - July 15, 1606 - October 4, 1669 Rembrandt van Rijn ca. 1638
The light of the sun coming in from the left accumulates in the group of trees towering in the center of the picture and marks the brightest area of the picture, which at the same time represents the border between the illuminated area on the left and the shady terrain on the right. The division of the two halves of the picture into two distinctly different landscapes gives the work its special atmospheric effect.

For more than 30 years, Landscape with Arch Bridge had been believed to be a work by one of Rembrandt’s students, Govert Flinck. Rediscoveries then revealed that the work was created by the master himself. The painting was accepted into the Berlin collections in 1924; up to the 1980s it was considered an authentic work by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn. In 1989, during the investigations carried out as part of the Rembrandt Research Project, it was written off as a work by Rembrandt and ascribed to Govert Flinck. More recent investigations and analysis of imaging made with technology that was not available at the time, however, have now definitively confirmed that the work is a genuine Rembrandt. Art is so full of surprises!

Now the painting is featured in the David Hockney – Landscapes in Dialogue: The Four Seasons from the Würth Collection exhibition on display in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin. We present it today thanks to this amazing museum. :)
