Henri Rousseau, a French artist who was never trained to become a painter, is best recognized for his jungle scenes, although he also created some marine paintings. The painting we present today references the D'Entrecasteaux cruiser, launched in 1896. The rough waves in Rousseau's painting overlay a theatrical backdrop, lacking depth. The blue, white, and red tones of the French boat harmonize with the various grays of the sky and sea. While Rousseau shared an interest in landscapes with the Impressionists, with whom he exhibited, he aimed to depict what he saw realistically. Despite having no formal training or artistic and scientific background, he created uniquely proportioned works.
