Dancing on a Shore

oil on canvas • 95.5 x 98.5 cm
  • Edvard Munch - 12 December 1863 - 23 January 1944 Edvard Munch 1900

Originally, The Dance on the Shore of 1900 was part of a collection of 22 paintings entitled The Frieze of Life. This term was coined by Munch to describe a series of paintings from the 1890s that dealt with the themes of love, illness, and death. Well-known works such as The Scream, Madonna, Vampire, Angst, Melancholy, and a number of others belong to this group (you can find all of them in our Archive).  ;)

Here we see the figures of dancing girls who are at the center of the action. They are being observed by two widows dressed in black. The solitary woman in red symbolizes the age of the climax of erotic strength. The cycle of life is rendered in wide colorful lines dividing the space into multicolored bands.

We present today's work thanks to the National Gallery in Prague

P.S. Learn more about Munch's monumental cycle, The Frieze of Life.  :)
