Flowers in Front of a Window

oil on canvas • 65 x 54 cm
  • Suzanne Valadon - September 23, 1865 - April 7, 1938 Suzanne Valadon 1930

The painter and graphic artist Suzanne Valadon, mother of the painter Maurice Utrillo, was influenced by the work of the Les Nabis group of artists as well as the symbolic Fauvist and Synthetism artists. She created figural paintings, landscapes, and still lifes with strong spontaneous and precise contours and contrasts of colors. Flowers in Front of a Window (1930) shows her masterful command of flexible outlines along with the application of intense color spaces, visible in the entire composition of the landscape viewed from the window and the fresh colors of the bouquet in the vase.

We present today's work thanks to the National Gallery in Prague.  :)

P.S. See how Suzanne Valadon's nudes defied the "male gaze" and presented a female body in a completely new light!  By the way, if you would like to learn more about women artists, please check out our Women Artists Notebook.  :)
