Still Life with Five Apricots

oil on canvas • 23.5 x 30 cm
  • Adriaen Coorte - ca. 1665 - after 1707 Adriaen Coorte 1704

Adriaen Coorte was a Dutch Golden Age painter of small and unpretentious still lifes. All of his works have the same simple layout: some fruit, vegetables, or nuts laid on a stone tabletop in the light, against a dark background. You may remember his Strawberries, which we  presented in the past (check it in our Archive). Here, Coorte has painted five apricots, which look velvety and tactile. Between the fruits, there is a leafy twig from an apricot tree. He highlighted the edges of the crumpled leaves with small touches of white paint. The artist put his signature, as usual, on the edge of the tabletop.

We present today's work thanks to the Mauritshuis in the Hague.

P.S. Fancy a strawberry... in art? We know it's past the season, but you need to see how famous artists depicted this amazing fruit—including Coorte! If you love our work and would like to support it, please consider supporting the development of the new version of the DailyArt app. Thank you.  :)
