The Kiss of Judas

fresco • 200 × 185 cm
  • Giotto di Bondone - 1266/7 - January 8, 1337 Giotto di Bondone 1304-1306

This fresco shows the scene from the New Testament, when Judas is kissing Jesus and betraying him. How do we know that it is Judas? People in Middle Ages always painted the same likeness of him - Judas was a liar and he betrayed Jesus so he wore yellow (fake gold) coat and had ginger hair. Now you’ll always recognize Judas in art of this period.
