View of Delft

oil on canvas • 96.5 x 116.4 cm
  • Johannes Vermeer - 1632 - December 1675 Johannes Vermeer c. 1660 - 1661

This is the most famous cityscape of the Dutch Golden Age, created by one of the most famous artists in the world—Johannes Vermeer. The interplay of light and shade, the impressive cloudy sky, and the subtle reflections in the water make this painting an absolute masterpiece. We are looking at Delft from the south. There is hardly a breath of wind and the city has an air of tranquility. Vermeer reflected this tranquility in his composition, by making three horizontal strips: water, city, and sky. He also painted the buildings a bit neater than they actually were.

We present today's work thanks to the Mauritshuis in the Hague, where until October 16, 2022, you can visit the FLASH | BACK. A new masterpiece in a flash exhibition, where 16 top photographers have produced new work inspired by the 17th-century paintings from the museum's collection ... including View of Delft of course!  :)
