Chickens and Ducks

oil on canvas • 136 x 115 cm
  • Melchior d' Hondecoeter - c. 1636 - 3 April 1695 Melchior d' Hondecoeter 1680
Hondecoeter specialized in painting poultry. Here, the birds are startled by a barking dog, which appears from the left. A colorful cockerel struts off haughtily, a white duck protects her chicks, and a pigeon flies off in haste.  This painting comes from the collection of the Orange-Nassau family; it was hung in Oranienstein Castle in Diez, Germany, in the 18th century.

We present Hondecoeter's work thanks to the Mauritshuis collection. Recently, on the occasion of its 200th birthday, the museum collaborated with five street artists to create life-size murals, including one with the painting we present today, on walls in The Hague. When you visit this beautiful city, don't miss it!
