Cherry Blossom and Full Moon

Woodblock print • 26 x 39 cm
  • Ohara Koson - February 9, 1877 - 1945 Ohara Koson 1932

Ohara Koson (Shoson) was a Japanese painter and woodblock print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement. He painted mostly flora and fauna and is recognized as a nihonga (“Japanese-style paintings”) painter in the kacho-ga (“nature print”) genre.  As we can see today, his delicate, richly colored artworks are animated by animal and plant life. Most of his early prints were designed for the foreign market. All were signed “Koson.” Between 1912 and 1926, he again devoted himself to painting. Using the name “Shoson,” he returned to the woodblock medium. Despite being widely published and prolific, unfortunately relatively little is known of Koson's life.

P.S. See the beautiful moon in Japanese woodblock prints that perfectly reflect a beautiful autumn evening. <3
