Jan Brueghel the Younger loved flowers. He was a Flemish Baroque painter, Jan Brueghel the Elder's son, and Pieter Bruegel the Elder's grandson. Taking over his father's workshop at an early age, he largely painted the same subjects as his father in a style that was similar to that of his father. He gradually was able to break away from his father's style by developing a broader, more painterly, and less structured manner of painting.

Today we present a simplified version of a subject and composition treated by the artist on several occasions before. In it a cacophony of colorful blooms explode from an amply sized basket; lily-of-the-valley, yellow ranunculus, cornflowers, an iris, pink roses, and pert striated tulips that reach skywards towards both upper corners of the composition. What you can tell about Jan Brueghel the Younger is that he achieved mastery in compositional balance—even with so many element everything is so harmonious!
