  • Claude Monet - 14 November 1840 - 5 December 1926 Claude Monet 1888/1889

On this day in 1840, Claude Monet, a French painter, founder of Impressionist painting, and a key precursor to Modernism, was born.

Guess who we feature today?  :)

During the 1870s, Claude Monet masterfully captured the essence of outdoor light with swift brushstrokes. In 1883, he settled in Giverny and became deeply engrossed in portraying light reflections on water and the intricate play of light permeating the air. This exploration birthed a series of themed artworks, starting with Grainstacks (or Haystacks) and culminating in the iconic Water Lilies series. Monet's work profoundly impacted the trajectory of art in the 20th century.

It is known that two other paintings exist that depict the morning ambiance from a similar perspective. Two years after these works, Monet embarked on creating 25 distinct Grainstacks paintings. This journey paved the way for his celebrated Water Lilies series. Notably, when comparing this period of his work to his earlier style from the 1870s, the strokes appear gentler and more refined. The paint is meticulously layered, filling every inch of the canvas. With the imposing grainstacks taking center stage, Monet exquisitely encapsulates the ever-evolving dance of air and light. Immersed in this thick ambiance, every element feels as if it's moving gracefully. The grainstacks, a chosen motif for Monet, were mounds of unprocessed wheat left to dry (before threshing). Symbolically, they represented the bountiful nature of the agrarian landscape of France.

I love the Grainstacks series; they are my favorite Monet paintings!
