Today we continue our monthly partnership with the Rijksmuseum.  :)  Enjoy!

Cats will be cats! Also, this butterfly didn't stand a chance more than three hundred years ago. Yun Bing, who painted this lively image, was a Chinese painter during the Qing dynasty. She is well known for her bird-and-flower paintings executing the "boneless" technique (meaning she hardly used any outlines) and became the most famed of the Yun family's female artists. It is told that she carefully observed flowers, grass, and insects around her home to absorb inspiration from nature. Her flower-and-bird paintings stress vivid and realistic depictions so as to create lifelike shapes. Besides, much attention is paid to the relationship between dark and light parts and the difference between the front and back sides of the leaves so that they present a three-dimensional effect.
