Today we continue our special month with the Rijksmuseum's collection with this amazingly beautiful painting: A Windmill on a Polder Waterway, Known as ‘In the Month of July’. Enjoy!
Paul Gabriël was a painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and etcher who belonged to the Hague School. He also loved his country; as he wrote in a letter: "Our country is saturated with color. ... I repeat, our country is not grey, not even in grey weather, nor are the dunes grey." Unlike many Hague School painters, he actually enjoyed depicting a beautiful summer day. There are even two of them in this painting: the image of the grass, sky, and mill, and their reflection in the water.
Have a great and calm Sunday!
