Julie Manet and her Dog

Oil on canvas • 73 x 80 cm
  • Berthe Morisot - January 14, 1841 - March 2, 1895 Berthe Morisot 1893

After the death of Berthe Morisot's husband, Eugène Manet (a brother of Edouard Manet), in 1892, Morisot moved with her daughter Julie to a small apartment on Rue Weber in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. In 1893, Julie posed in the living room with an elegant sofa, Louis XVI chairs, and the walls adorned with Japanese prints that her mother had probably exchanged for some of her paintings. Still mourning, Julie is dressed in a black silk dress fitted at the waist with puffed sleeves. She is shown with her dog Laërte, given to her by the Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé. When Berthe Morisot died in 1895, he became the teenager's guardian. Mallarmé actively organized the posthumous exhibition of Morisot paintings, which took place in 1896.

P.S. Julie Manet had a beautiful upbringing, surrounded by great artists. Even after the untimely death of her parents when she became an orphan at the age of 16, she did not step out of the scene and continued posing for Pierre-Auguste Renoir, among others.
